Ron Rowe steps down; Tim Wood replaces

After 30 very gratifying seasons as the head boys basketball coach at Honesdale, Ron Rowe, right, has resigned.

"Thirty years is a long time," 58-year-old Rowe said. "It’s a year-round job now. I had some ups and downs with my health and it’s not fair to the kids that I’m not there all the time. You add that all up and it’s time for me to move on.

"I’ve had a wide range of emotions. The kids who played for me have been great. Kids are calling and parents are calling, the memories they bring back, and the fellow coaches, I will miss. I’m really going to miss the kids and being in the gym."

A very well respected coach in the Lackawanna League, Rowe won almost 400 games and two league championships -- one in the Wayne League and another in the Lackawanna. He was a man dedicated to the fundamentals, and to his players. His devotion will sorely be missed.

"Ronnie has been great for the kids," Honesdale superintendent Thomas Jenkins said. "He always pushed the kids to succeed and coached hard. But beyond that he’s been more than just a coach to the players. He has been a mentor for the kids.

"He’s been a great role model for the kids."

Longtime assistant Tim Wood will be replacing Rowe. He spent two stints as Rowe's assistant and was the head coach of the girls program for 11 years.

"It’s not like I’m taking over a program that is starting over," the 47-year-old Wood said. "This is a mature program. We will maintain the positive things that Ron Rowe has built into the program and add things that we have built to make us more competitive."

Here's a closer look at how the local runners did at the annual event held at Shippensburg University.

As you can see, District 2 is going to be a very competitve meet across the board this season. There should be some exciting races between Hanover Area's Amanda Kuhl and Montrose's Julia Koloski, as well as Blue Ridge's Lauren Findley and Lackawanna Trail's Lauren Ellsworth in girls.

And Dallas has a very strong boys team that could give defending champion Abington Heights all it can handle at the District 2 meet.
