North Pocono Volleyball at States

North Pocono has been outstanding all season.

If you haven't gotten a chance to see this group, coach Chris Summa has really got them playing well as a team. Ryan Willie, right, has had a remarkable season and has such great elevation that it is tough to contain him. Matt Smith does a nice job of setting, but no team the Trojans have faced in the WVC or York Suburban passes like this group.

You simply cannot make a mistake. Mike Cabets, Eric Steinmetz, left, Nick Deschaine are all willing to get down and dig the kills out.

And of course they have the power. Very strong on their kills and because Willie, DeSchaine, Steinmetz, Joe Bonacci and Bisignani are all strong hitters they can attack you from all angles.

Now the real challenge begins in the PIAA playoffs.

There are no free-bes. North Pocono must play the No. 1 team in the state, Ambridge, in Pool B to start the morning action at 9 a.m. After that, the Trojans will play No. 2 Maplewood, and will finish with Manheim Central.

This is going to be a deep Pool and if North Pocono can string together runs it could be the big surprise of the tournament.

PIAA Track & Field: LTC girls shine

It was a remarkable day for the girls track and field performers from the Lackawanna Track Conference and District 2.

And their performances leave promise for an even bigger day Saturday at the PIAA track and field championships.

Riverside's Vanessa Munley won the first medal of the day, finishing in a tie for third in the girls Class AA pole vault. She cleared 10-6.

Lakeland's April Doyle won a fourth-place medal in the Class AA girls discus. She had a throw of 126-7.

After that several girls qualified for the semifinals and final races.

District 2 Girls Soccer Playoffs

STAFF REPORT

Playing in the tough Wyoming Valley Conference A division resulted in Berwick and Abington Heights receiving top seeds for the District 2 girls soccer tournaments that begin Wednesday.

Berwick, which won the WVC A, is the No. 1 seed for the Class AA tournament. The Bulldogs (10-1-3) will host GAR (10-3), which won a play-in game last week to qualify. The Grenadiers are enjoying a remarkable turnaround from last season when they did not win a match.

Berwick won the District 2 Class AAA title last season, while Dallas won the Class AA crown. Dallas is the No. 2 seed, sporing an 11-3 record, and will host North Pocono on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m..

The champion and third-place team will advance to the PIAA playoffs.

In Class AAA, Abington Heights (9-4-1) is the No. 1 seed and received a bye into the semifinals. Wyoming Valley West finished 11-1 in the WVC B division and is the No. 2 seed, also receiving a bye.

Koloski's Gold Rush

Montrose junior Julia Koloski made the most out of a lost opportunity.
Injured in her sophomore season, she missed the Robert Spagna Championship meet, which she dominated as a freshman. The year off didn't hurt her. On Tuesday she looked spectacular in winning four gold medals.
She edged Abington Heights' Jordan Hoyt in the 100, winning in a time of 12.78 seconds. Hoyt came across in 12.83.
Koloski added a meet record in the long jump -- having only one jump measured. She also won the triple jump and ran a leg of the winning 400 relay team.
Thanks to that Montrose tied with Western Wayne -- each scoring 68 1/2 points -- in Class AA.
Lakeland came in third with 65 1/2 points. April Doyle continued to dominate the throwing events, winning the shot put and discus. She broke her own meet record in the shot with a distance of 43 feet. Teammate Angelia Prebich came in third in the discus, and Tori Doyle was third in the 100 hurdles for the Chiefs.
In Class AAA, it was all Abington Heights. The Comets scored 103 points to outdistance Scranton. Despite some illness that ran through the team during the meet and forced some scratches, Abington Heights was led by Krista Matsko, who won the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Abington Heights also won te 3200 relay, and Hoyt won the 200.

UP NEXT: Class AAA District 2 meet, Tuesday; Class AA District 2 meet, Thursday.

Robert Spagna Championship Drama

Coming into the fifth annual Robert Spagna Championship meet it appeared that the competition would be some of the best of the season based on times throughout the spring.
And despite cool and damp comditions at Scranton Memorial Stadium, the athletes did not disappoint.
The Class AAA meet came down to one-half a point. Scranton Prep won the championship over Abington Heights.
In Class AA, Valley View used its depth to end Lakeland's four-year stranglehold on the team title.
I'm not sure what amazed me more -- Just how fast Alex St. John really is or the resolve the athletes showed as the temperatures dropped and the rains came.
St. John downshifted in the last 10 meters because he had built a huge lead in the much anticipated 100. Riverside's Matt Talerico closed the gap in the 200, though, and both are going to be favorites at their respective District 2 meets next week.
Scranton Prep's Peter Frein, right, and Arjunan Gnandendran went 1-2 in the 1600, and Sam Kuchwara was impressive in the 3200 as the Cavaliers flexed their distance running muscles.
Abinton Heights' Pat Callahan ignored the rain to set a meet record by clearing 13-6 to win the pole vault.
In all seven meet records were set and this meet continues to build a tradition. The kids are really taking it to heart and the spirit at the meet was truly overpowering at times.

STAR OF THE MEET
Alex St. John, Delaware Valley
Won the 100 in impressive fashion in a meet record time of 11.12 seconds. Then he added a win in the 200 in 22.76 seconds. But probably his most impressive effort came as the anchor leg in the 400 relay in a slow heat. He tracked down two teams and crusied past them in a time of 45.46 seconds, which placed the Warriors fourth overall in the race.

SURPRISE OF THE MEET
Jordan Green, Blue Ridge
Seeded at a time of 55.68 seconds, the Blue Ridge senior ran a time of 51.54 seconds to place second in the 400-meter dash.

TURNING POINT OF THE MEET
Peter Frein and Arjunan Gnandendran, Scranton Prep
The Cavaliers had scored 16 points in the first five events. But when Frein and Gnandendran set a fast pace, they took control of the race and the meet. Frein finished in 4:37.34 and Gnandendran came across in 4:37.77 as Scranton Prep gained 18 points and gained momentum into the rest of the meet.
